For those individuals who have undergone Lap-Band surgery or are thinking of having the Lap-Band surgery performed, there are a few things that one should know when it comes to diet and nutrition guidelines for these types of patients. Many people may think that once the surgery is performed the individual who has had it done can go about their day eating anything they so desire but this is not the case. Lap-Band patients need to follow certain diet and nutrition guidelines once the Lap-Band is in place. The following paragraphs will describe some of these diet and nutrition plans which should be followed by Lap Band Surgery patients.

Four Weeks Post-Operative Lap Band Surgery Procedure

The patient who has just had the Lap-Band procedure performed will not be able to eat too many things right away. For the first few days following the surgery, the individual can have small amounts of fluids but that is about it. After those first few days have passed, the types of food which the patient may add to their daily diet for the next three weeks or so will be light. Items such as clear broths and soups, low-fat yogurt, milk, Jello and soft fruit are acceptable things which the patient may eat. It is very important that the individual who has had the procedure performed eat light foods and liquids for the time being while they are recuperating and getting used to the Lap-Band. Certain softer foods may be added as needed during this time period but it is important not to rush getting back into a normal eating pattern too quickly.

Recommended Eating Habits to Follow with the Lap-Band

After approximately 4-6 weeks have passed and the doctor has given the okay, the Lap-Band recipient can then begin eating regular meals. There are certain eating habits which are recommended by health professionals with regard to individuals who have had this type of surgery performed. The first is that the individual should make sure that they eat three small meals a day and that they do not eat between meals. Other recommended eating habits include chewing the food sufficiently, stopping eating when one feels full, not drinking anything while eating the meals and drinking enough fluids throughout the rest of the day. These recommendations are provided to the individual so that the Lap-Band can work as efficiently as it should.

Recommended Types of Food for Lap-Band Patients

Along with the eating habits that medical professionals recommend are the types of food which those individuals who have undergone this surgical procedure should eat. It is recommended that people who have had the Lap-Band surgery performed eat a good variety of fruits and vegetables, approximately 1 to 2 servings of fruit and 2 to 3 servings of vegetables per day. Breads and cereals are also important for these individuals to include within their daily diet and they can eat items such as corn flakes and rye bread. With regard to meat, fish, eggs, and poultry, those who have had the Lap-Band implanted within them can have 1 serving of any of these items each day.

Dairy products are also an important part of one's daily menu and items such as milk, yogurt and cheese can be included in the diet. As for fats, these should be restricted to 3 to 4 teaspoons per day. When an individual needs something to drink, water is the number one choice; however, other beverages can be included in the diet as well such as tea, coffee and non-carbonated beverages.

As one probably has noticed, the previously mentioned items covered all of the basic food groups. It is important that individuals who have had the Lap-Band surgery performed be mindful of what they put into their bodies on a daily basis. Although it may not be as strict as some diet plans that are out there today, it is still important to eat a variety of items and pursue a well-rounded diet.

Food Items One Should Avoid

It is important to note food items that individuals who have had this type of surgery should avoid after the Lap-Band is in place. Basically, any and all foods which have little or no nutritional value are ones that should be kept off the daily menu as much as possible. Any food items with large amounts of sugars are ones which the individual should pass up on a regular basis. Although items with a higher sugar content can be eaten every once in a while, it is best to avoid these types of foods whenever possible.

In addition to high sugar items, individuals who have had the Lap-Band surgery performed should also avoid foods which are high in fat. An example of a food type which should be avoided most of the time is desserts. Many desserts have a high fat content and it is best to eat desserts only on special occasions or occasionally overall.

Some people may have questions regarding whether or not alcohol is something which an individual can still have after they have had this surgical procedure performed. The answer to this is yes, but in moderation. Having a glass of wine every now and again is something that is acceptable and individuals who have had this surgery can do so should they so desire and their doctor agrees.

The Lap-Band surgical procedure is one which has increased in popularity since its inception a few years back. It is important for individuals to know that simply by having this surgery performed, it does not mean that they can eat anything they want to. There are certain diet and nutritional recommendations which Lap-Band patients should follow so that their weight loss success continues for many years to come and also so that they may stay healthy while doing so.
